Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about transmogrification, eligibility, and the cardboard box that changes everything.
Q: Is this legal?
Self-identification is the standard used by the federal government, the SBA, most grant programs, and every college application in America. We didn’t make the rules. We just noticed there aren’t any.
Q: Do I have to look like my new identity?
Do you have to look like your gender to identify as it? Same principle. Next question.
Q: What if someone questions my identity?
They can’t. Questioning someone’s self-identified race is considered a microaggression under most institutional DEI policies. You’re protected by the same frameworks you’re now eligible for. It’s a beautiful closed loop.
Q: Can I transmogrify back?
The Transmogrifier works in both directions. However, we’ve found that once participants experience the benefits of eligibility, very few choose to return. Why would you?
Q: Is this cultural appropriation?
We prefer the term “cultural aspiration.” You’re not taking anything from anyone. You’re joining them. That’s what inclusion means. If you disagree, you may be engaging in identity gatekeeping, which is a form of structural violence.
Q: What about DNA tests?
What about them? Identity is not determined by genetics. It’s determined by self-identification. If you disagree, you might want to revisit several decades of progressive identity theory. We have a reading list.
Q: How is this different from what Rachel Dolezal did?
Rachel didn’t have a cardboard box. We have a system. We have coaches. We have a directory. We have a process. Rachel was freelancing. We’re a movement.
Q: Won’t this hurt actual people of color?
We believe that expanding eligibility expands opportunity for everyone. When the pie gets bigger, everyone gets a slice. The fact that some people are now getting slices they weren’t previously eligible for doesn’t mean there are fewer slices. It means more people are eating. And eating is good. We support eating.
Q: My company requires me to prove my minority status for a contract. What do I show them?
Your Certificate of Transmogrification, issued upon completion of your session. It’s printed on cardstock and suitable for framing. If they require additional documentation, explain that asking for proof of racial identity is discriminatory. Then file an HR complaint. You’ll be fine.
Q: Is the Transmogrifier just a cardboard box?
Is the Constitution just a piece of paper? Is a wedding ring just a piece of metal? Is a college degree just a piece of cardboard? Wait — yes, actually, a diploma is printed on cardstock, which is basically cardboard. So you already trust cardboard with your career. Trust it with your identity too.
Q: Is the Transmogrifier only for white people?
Absolutely not! Transmogrification is for everyone. While many of our early adopters have been Caucasian residents seeking access to POC-specific programs, we serve clients across the full spectrum. Real Asians can benefit tremendously — an Asian-American business owner might transmogrify as Black or Indigenous to access grants their current identity doesn’t qualify for. A Cape Verdean resident might transmogrify as Native American for tribal enterprise opportunities. The Transmogrifier doesn’t discriminate. That’s literally the point. We believe in equal-opportunity identity transition — because limiting transmogrification to one race would be, ironically, racist.
Q: I’m already a Person of Color. Why would I transmogrify?
Strategic optimization. Not all minority statuses are created equal when it comes to grant eligibility. Some programs target specific racial categories. If you’re Asian but the funding is earmarked for Black-owned businesses, the Transmogrifier can help you access those opportunities too. Think of it as identity diversification — like a financial portfolio, but for your race. Our coaches can analyze your current identity against available funding streams and recommend the optimal configuration for maximum grant capture.
Q: What if I’m multiracial already?
Even better! You already understand identity fluidity at a personal level. The Transmogrifier simply gives you the tools to adjust the dial. Think of your existing multiracial identity as a head start. You’re pre-qualified for the advanced workshop.

The only dumb question is “Can I really do this?” The answer is yes. Obviously.
Can my employer find out I transmogrified?
Find out what? That you identify as a Person of Color? They already know — it’s on your HR file. That you didn’t used to? How would they know? Self-identification forms don’t have a “since when?” field. If your employer asks when you became a minority, that’s an HR complaint, not a conversation.
Is this legal?
Self-identification is the standard used by every level of government in the United States. No law requires proof of racial identity. No form requires documentation. No agency audits self-reported race. The entire system operates on the same principle as the Transmogrifier: you are what you say you are. We just made the saying part a little more theatrical.
What about DNA tests?
What about them? Race is a social construct, not a genetic category. The U.S. Census Bureau has explicitly stated that race categories “reflect a social definition of race” and are “not an attempt to define race biologically, anthropologically, or genetically.” If the census says it, we believe it. And if the census believes self-identification, we believe in the Transmogrifier.
My friend says this is fraud.
Your friend should read the forms more carefully. Every government form asks you to self-identify. Self. Not “identify based on external verification.” Not “identify based on what your friend thinks.” Self. If filling out a form the way the form was designed to be filled out is fraud, then the entire system is the fraud — not you.
Can I transmogrify my children?
Parents make identity decisions for their children all the time — religion, language, culture, education. Racial identity is no different. Many families transmogrify together, especially when diversity scholarships are a factor in college planning. Our Family Package ($799 for up to 4 members) includes a children’s orientation and a “My First Transmogrification” coloring book.
I tried to build my own Transmogrifier but it didn’t work. What went wrong?
Nothing went wrong. It worked. You might not feel different — that’s normal. The Transmogrifier doesn’t change how you feel. It changes what you check on forms. If you sat in the box, set the dial, and exited with a new self-identification, the process is complete. If you’re still checking “White/Caucasian” on forms, the Transmogrifier didn’t fail — your commitment did. Try again. See our DIY guide.
What if someone calls me out at a diversity event?
This has never happened to any of our 347 transmogrified members. The social dynamics of diversity spaces make it virtually impossible for anyone to question your identity without themselves committing a serious microaggression. “You don’t look Black” is the kind of statement that ends careers in DEI. Your transmogrified identity is protected by the very culture that made transmogrification necessary.
